Work/Life Balance

What is Work/Life Balance?

In simplest form, it is a balance between work and leisure that has you fulfilled and content in both areas.

The reality is much more complicated and can vary from one person to the next. The balance is an ebb and flow between juggling the responsibilities and desires associated with both our personal and professional lives. Regardless of the day of the week, work and life happen continuously. There are meetings and appointments, deadlines and expectations that we are being held accountable to for those at work and at home. Sometimes we have to pick and choose in the moment what takes the priority. Being torn between the two worlds can often lead to stress and burnout!

What do the surveys say?

Hubstaff posted data showing personal perfectionism and company culture are the top barriers to establishing a work/life balance for an employee. In just the US, 48% of workers call themselves “workaholics” and 73% believe that the balance is crucial. Europe is the leader globally in establishing a work/life balance with low levels of stress and daily anger. In Denmark, only 1% of workers work more than 50 hours a week! Where does the Time Go?

In 7 days, there are 168 hours to live life. If you are spending at least 50 of those working, you are left with 118. The CDC says that 30% of employed adults in the US sleep less than 6 hours per night despite the recommended 7 hours, this results in roughly 40 hours being allocated to sleep.

Now you are left with 78 hours of ‘FREE’ time. This is quickly taken up by eating and daily hygiene routines which can consume 3-5 hours a day. Now you are down to just 50 hours. If you have kids then they are likely to consume much of that with their activities.

So How do I find Balance?

It take practice and consistency, but finding the balance is achievable if you are willing to follow some basic strategies and tips.

- Set Boundaries! Give yourself the foul lines of your life that will serve as your guide towards your actions. For example, if you determine that a foul line is not working past 6 pm, then you have to do whatever it takes to ensure you disconnect by that time.

- Prioritize Self-Care! You have to commit to taking care of yourself so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. Creating habits that support both physical and mental health are critical. Remember that self-care is NOT selfish.

- Just Say NO! This one is hard for most people but a much needed trait to learn. If you do not have the time or energy to do something, learn to say no. Saying yes to something that is not desirable will only lead to more stress and anxiety.

- Manage Your Time! Since your time is limited, make sure you are managing it effectively by scheduling important tasks, delegating what you can to others, and utilize the technology at your fingertips to support you. You do not need to take on the world solo with your pen and paper.

Is Connection Important?

Social connection is an invaluable aspect of the work/life balance. Having both personal and professional relationships that allow for conversation, networking, and engagement can keep one motivated and energized. Studies have shown that those who have active social connections are often more productive as they are generally have a stronger mental health state. One feels satisfied with lower stress levels and improved self-confidence. Saying no still applies to social connections though as engaging in environments that cause stress and anxiety is not beneficial.
